Hey guys, hope you're having a good week!

Honestly, I've been looking forward to this scene for a while... I wanted to get this into book 3, but I spread myself too thin on the perspectives, and had to put this a little further back.

Anyway, if people need an explanation on it, I'd be happy to outline the process shown here.

In personal news, I had my interview. I got caught up on a few things, and it wasn't my finest interview. I may or may not be getting through to the next phase.

I also got into the Duolingo Private Beta. If you don't know what it is, and are interested in learning a new language, I highly suggest checking it out. I opted to start with German, and already it's pretty interesting :) Der Mann isst einen Apfel? I dunno, I'm still going through the basics :D

Anyway, take care and have a great weekend!

The process:

First, the brains are printed like Kyo's 3d Printer, a process which exists in real life to create organs, create skin for burn victims and things of that nature. They start with some legitimate cells, and then encourage them to reproduce, after which they can create the organ.

If you're unaware of the real science behind it, I encourage you to check it out.

The next panel shows this real brain matter being injected with something else. It's basically a filler compound to expand the amount of TOGM that can be created per portion of brain cells.

After that, we have electricity introduced into the process, causing a reaction with the filler to significantly increase the amount of brain substitute.

The last two panels show heat being added, which both cooks the brain, as well as melting it down into a liquid form which then descends into the lower section of the machine.

And that's how basic TOGM is made :)

Bahaha. My German is awful. For a moment, I was like "how can a man be an apple?"

Awesome facial expressions!

do it

post the outline

...and put a post comment bottom at the bottom of the page too

Uhm, MatthewJA.... there IS.

Ahh, growing a bunch of disembodied brains for processing into TOGM! This can be a Matrix-like situation, if the brains are stimulated to think they're living in virtual bodies in a virtual world. Actually, maybe that's what our heroes are all along! How could they prove they aren't actually disembodied brains in the TOGM factory, in the process of being processed into food?
Magravan edit delete reply
@Linden - Technically my German is also awful, and that might have been what I said >_> I MEANT to say "The man eats an apple." :)

@meager - It's funny because when I first thought up the scene, I pictured Sylene growing more and more disgusted with the process as she watched on... I was afraid that it would be too much drawing to ask of June, so I cut that part out, and just had figures in the first and last ones... June decided that it would look better with Sylene getting grossed out in each panel without me even mentioning it to her... I think it's better for the inclusion as well :)

@MatthewJA - Okay, I will :)

The post comment at the bottom is a fickle thing. Same with the entire footer... For reasons I don't know, and wouldn't even know how to figure out, those two elements sometimes end up in the right column instead.

But most times it should be proper...

@Muchacho NL - Not always ;)

@PhilC - Presumably because if it was a Matrix-like enviroment, why expose the Matrix? The best cages are the ones that you don't even notice the bars. ;)

Alex Starkiller
Don't even notice the bars? I'm pretty sure that the best prison would include a lot of alcohol. ;P *rimshot*

Anyway, I love how TOGM is made! Makes me hungry!
Cheet4h (Guest) edit delete reply
"Der Mann isst einen Apfel" is correct for what you were trying to say. I'm german, I should know it :P
Also, good luck on our articles. Most people say, German is the most difficult european language, because of our articles ...
theorbtwo (Guest) edit delete reply
So, if they have the technology to create actual brain matter, does that imply that eating the pre-filler TOGM would make you closer to a 6?
Magravan edit delete reply
@Alex Starkiller - I specifically said cage ;) And if you're not noticing the bars because you're too drunk from all the alcohol, it still works ;D

@Cheet4h - Excellent! It's a little confusing, but very cool. Even if I don't achieve any real capacity with German for it, I'm enjoying what I have learned so far :)

@theorbtwo - That's a great question! And for the answer, I will direct you to a future strip that will be writen sometime later ;)

Wow. After all that speculation, the manufacture process is... pretty normal. Ish. The filler substance is still mysterious though...
And where did the original cell line come from?
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
PS I did GCSE German (High School to Americans) and got an A* (equivalent to a 5 at High School) - I've forgotten most of it by now though!
Magravan edit delete reply
So you're saying you're A Star qualified? :)

The process is fairly mundane, which sort of underscores the whole concept of the story... We have zombies, and ultimately it's all fairly mundane. They still worry about normal things...

The filler is the x-factor... That's what gives us the flexibility for the science fiction side of things :)
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
Well, it's a liquid and it expands (irrevocably) upon heating... hmmm...

Four A* grades actually (German, Maths, Citizenship and Biology). And 5 A, 2 B and one C (Cookery). My mum thought I'd fail Cookery... I thought I'd fail English.
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
Maybe it's polyfilla?
Would injected TOGM have a stronger effect, the way that injected speed has a stronger effect than ingested/snorted? (I did Citizenship, it had a lesson on drugs...)
Magravan edit delete reply
@aok666 - Expands on electricity being introduced :)

And no, absolutely not. If it's not introduced into the system via the mouth, it would probably be as useful as injecting lard :)
T.Gatto edit delete reply

It looks so much more appetizing now.
Magravan edit delete reply
See, that's what they all say! ... Oh wait, no. No one says that. Ever.
Jonason (Guest) edit delete reply
I think this comic page revealed some big story secrets to me. I'd love to know if im correct, but i don't want to spoil anything with posting my assumptions. And i don't think you guys would verify my thoughts IF they where right. ITS KILLING ME!
Alex Starkiller edit delete reply
Alex Starkiller
I dunno. Looks might yummy to me... Good thing my loval grocery store sells TOGM in bulk! I'll be eating good today.
Beadle (Guest) edit delete reply
I'm with Jonason - I think I have an idea what this might actually mean, but I don't want to say anything.

Do they do flavoured TOGM?

"Passion Fruit and Mango TOGM - for that tropical brain flavour you all love so much."
Magravan edit delete reply
@Jonason - If it helps, I'd really love to know your guess, but you're right that I probably wouldn't verify it ;) This is one of those times where it would be nice to have a forum, I think... A separate section for potential spoilers and such.

@Alex Starkiller - Well they didn't order it from us... I think you might have counterfeit TOGM! :O

@Beadle - The factory doesn't flavour it, but other companies out there might... I think. Honestly, in the beginning it was all supposed to be bland, basic TOGM, but June got bored drawing that and really wanted to draw a hamburger... So I'm not sure if I'm contradicting myself now by saying that it can be flavoured...
RZ (Guest) edit delete reply
WOW! Sylene and TOGM and Me all togetherd at lazt!

I knew my superriore planing would make this happen eventtualy!
Alex Starkiller edit delete reply
Alex Starkiller

And I don't think you're contradicting yourself. It's the process, and TOGM itself that needs to be bland. But, of course people out there are going to want more excitement and flavour in their life, that's hum- zombie nature!
Magravan edit delete reply
@RZ - He's really the evil mastermind behind everything :)

@Alex Starkiller - I'm just not sure if any of the characters have mentioned that while the shape itself is variable, the taste is basically the same.
model S (Guest) edit delete reply
I think Beth mentioned that pretty early on when explaining it to John. However you can chalk it up to her talking about what 3's and below get, and I'm pretty sure she said "most" togm. I could be wrong though.
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
Magravan and June explained in early author comments - and some fairly recent ones - that all shaped TOGM still tastes of TOGM. I recall asking about additives and being told that no there wouldn't be flavourings.
Magravan edit delete reply
@model S - I have trouble remembering whether it's something I've said in comic, something I've said in author's notes, something I've said in random conversations or something I've thought up and never said :)

@aok666 - That makes sense :)
Dodom edit delete reply
I'm with theorbtwo! I betcha the raw brain diet would make everyone a 5 and the current power structure would collapse!

Though if they did have the power to enlighten, then they'd probably want to turn the 1s into 2s, since the 1s are just useless mouths to feed while the 2s can work.
Or maybe they don't think they can do it without people figuring it out?

And then, imagine that someone like RZ got access to infinite brains, how smart could he get? He'd still be a little kid. Not that kids can't be smart, but you still expect them to be a little naive and whimsical.

Ah so many questions!
Feartheswans edit delete reply
So TOGM is like Spam.... take some meat, load up with Fillers, shove it in a package and send it out to be eaten?
Magravan edit delete reply
@Dodom - It's an interesting theory :) If RZ got ahold of infinite brains, he would become infinitely intelligent.. Like a super computer FAAAAR beyond what we have capable today. Everyone higher up on the totem pole would enjoy a nice bump themselves :)

@Feartheswans - Except TOGM doesn't have a Monty Python song about it... Yet. ;)
AnonMonkey (Guest) edit delete reply
Mmmmm, that TOGM looks fantastic. Scoop it up and spread it on crackers and you've got yourself a party!

As for you learning german...Warum ein Apfel? Der Mann kann oder Obst essen. Keep on truckin', you'll be speaking fluently in no time!
Magravan edit delete reply
I'm sure people have spread it on crackers... Am I the only one squicked out about that thought?
