Hey everyone, welcome to the first TOGM strip of May!

I don't know why, but I like this one. The way I picture Robert talking just makes me smile. He's a convoluted character to write for, but it's pretty entertaining to me sometimes ;)

Have a great weekend!

hmmm yes May *looks at room* why must that one and mine be equally messy...
asheswillfall (Guest) edit delete reply
Did you think he was a goner? because the five just won't stay away.

I like that Robert talks a lot with his hands. He's sounding like a mom
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
Why did Robert have the right to make Thomas tidy his room anyway?
PhilC edit delete reply
I must say, the wrath of Robert is a terrible, terrible thing to behold!

So, why is Robert's hair toon-shaded, while Thomas has semi-realistic shading on his hair?
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
@Zauber Paracelsus: because Robert's is presumably artifical (as for all zombies) while John's is almost certainly real.

Since you like answering questions;
- What is the sound of 1 hand clapping?
- If a tree falls alone in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
- How many roads must a man walk down, before you can call him a man?
- What is the question to the answer 42?
- Will the Pirates ever win the World Series?

@ T.Gatto:
1: when writing for it i like to use "slap slap slap" but that's a personal prefrence.

2: no, sound is defined as the interpertation of vibrations in the air, so if nothing is around to interperet the vibrations made, then there's no "sound" by definition.

3: 42.

4: see your above question.

5: no. they suck. ninja always prevent them from winning because pirates suck.

was that satisfactory for you T?

@Balthasar - Because you too destroyed it while looking for a booby magazine page? :)

@asheswillfall - Haha, yeah :) He's very hand talky in this one.

@aok666 - The fact that Robert is the leader of the society, owner of the building, and could theoretically feed 'Thomas' to any random zombie... I could go on ;)

@PhilC - Funny you should say that... :D

@Zauber Paracelsus - That's a good question :)

@aok666 - That's a plausible answer :D

@T.Gatto -

1. Wooosh, wooosh, woosh :)

2. Sadly I have to agree with Model S on this one, simply because of the narrow definition of sound which the few places I looked at reference that something must hear it for it to be considered a sound. Which is a shame, because I had made an analogy to Peek-a-boo, object permanence and the hubris of assuming that if people aren't there to hear it, it doesn't exist :)

Edit: Screw that, the other definitions below the top one don't require a listener. Yes, yes there is. If there isn't a sound, put a tape recorder there. No one was there to listen to it, however, it makes an effect. You could have the sound imprinted onto a clay disk. If there was no sound, what would it be recording?

3. Zero, you called him a man in the question.

4. What is 7 x 6?

5. Yes. However, they will be actual pirates, and not the baseball team.

answers are as follows,
1- Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh :)
2- Yes there is a noise made, since it happens on earth where there is air for sound waves to be made, whether someone human was there to listen.
3- Depends on who's following him down the road.
4- What is the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything - From Douglas Adams
5- No, Pirates never win, Peter Pan and his band of Lost Boys have always outwitted them, and they always will :)

Best answer I got to that was from reading the Mallorean series by the Eddings.

There is always something around to hear a tree fall. birds, animals, insects. Don't need humans around for a sound to exist, or to perceive it. Only human arrogance demands it doesn't exist if we aren't there to 'interpret' it.

In my mind Robert sounds a lot like Bill Nighy. ( He was Davy Jones in POTC Number Too Darned Many...) He has a very distinctive way of speaking. Just my 2 cents :)
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
1) Well, if you believe Pratchett, it's "cl". The other hand makes the "ap". But to me it just sounds like very quiet clapping.
2) What the others said about vibrations being the definition and whatnot.
3) As somebody else said, you already called him a man. And I hate that song.
4) The Question and Answer can't be known in the same universe. Closest answers so far are "6x9" and "the building number of Stavro Mueller Beta".
5) Who are the Pirates?
the_brigand (Guest) edit delete reply
1. one hand can't clap
2. yes. sound is a pressure wave created through mechanical vibrations.
3. you just called him a man, why are you making to extra legwork?
4. "What is Stavro Mueller's Beta street address?" It's all about perspective, when you're talking about the ultimate question the secret lies with knowing for 'whom' we are answering.
5. They've already won 5.

@drivinallnight - And now we know why they aren't very good at baseball.. Their opponents are using fairy dust!

@Sleel - That's a good point :)

@Fortunado1972 - Ever since June asked Rhett from Rhett and Link if she could base the design of Robert on him (and got permission), he's been the face and voice I imagine Robert with :)

@aok666 - If Pratchett said it, is has to be true :)

@the_brigand - The Maple Leafs have won lots of Stanley Cups, but that was a long time ago with a different team and different ... pretty much everything ;) Past wins are not an indicator of future success.
the_brigand (Guest) edit delete reply
I take it back "will ... ever" grammatically does not include the past.

1 more question, is it true you can not get Hostess Twinkies in Canada (if true how do you survive)?

Thanks for the answers everyone. :)
aok666 (Guest) edit delete reply
@T. Gatto: I don't know about Canada, but I do know that you can't get them in the UK (except in the occasional American Candy Co shop in places with a high immigrant population - such as the town where I live). And we manage just fine (not sure if Mini Rolls are similar enough to count though).
Magravan edit delete reply
@the_brigand - Maybe someday :)

@T.Gatto - I ... don't know? I would have thought yes, but I'm not sure.
model S (Guest) edit delete reply
@sleel: i was assuming there was nothing there to interperate it.

@mag: while your logic seems sound (-rimshot-) a tape recorder has the ability to interperate the pressure waves into sound, think of it this way: soundproof and seal a large steel box with a c4 charge, as long as the box remains sealed, the c4 hasn't gone off as there's no indication it has, nothing can interperate the air pressure into sound, as the c4 would kill them or destroy the object, therefore, the c4 made no sound.
Magravan edit delete reply
The walls of the large steel box would serve as interpretation in the same fashion. You might not be aware that the sound happened, but it did. :)

Same with Schrodinger's Cat. It's state exists as one or the other. The fact that you can't know which is the case is useful for mathematics, but simple fact is that it is either dead or alive in that box. And the cat knows that it is alive... unless it's not ;)
